Interview with a Road Test Examiner: Real Advice from the Other Side of the Window
For most new drivers, a road is one of the most nervous destructive experiences on travel to get licenses. You have practiced parallel parking, remembered any rule and tried your best to remain calm - but sitting with a road test examiner can still feel scared.
What if you can hear directly from the other side?
We sat with a retired road test examinations from Ontario to get clear, practical advice. Here what they had to say what they really see, what mistakes they see most often, and how they can improve the chances of passing in the first try.
Question: Which number one thing are you looking for underway? Examiner: Self -confidence - no. We want to see that you are under control of the vehicle and understand how to make safe decisions on the road. This does not mean driving or showing quickly; This means being calm, conscious and approximate.
Question: Is there a mistake that makes good drivers fail? Examiner: Stop rolling stop signs. This is such a common habit - people slow down, but don’t come quite. If your wheels are still moving forward, it is not a limitation, and it can be an automatic error, especially in residential areas or near schools.
Question: Are you allowed to show any feelings during the test? Examiner: We are trained to be neutral, so we do not smile or sit too much. It is not that we are not cold - to ensure that we are appropriate and consistent. Don’t try to read our feelings. Just be aware of your driving.
Question: Do you fail that people get nervous? Examiner: No way. The veins are natural. We care about how to deal with them. Take your breath deeply, check your mirrors, follow the rules. If you are nervous but still driving safely and legally, Question: What is a tip that you want more people to know before their test? Examiner: Practice the exact field where you want to be tested. Learn routes, speed limits, difficult intersections. Also practice parking in the same type of vehicle that you want to use for testing. Knowledge creates confidence.
Question: What do you think of coaches cycling during tests? Examiner: It depends on the student. Some calm down to keep the instructor in the back seat. Other people become more nervous. In any case, coaches are not allowed to talk or help during testing. If they are with them, help you feel supported, then go for it.
Question: Any last advice for new drivers? Examiner: As the station, keep your passengers safe every time - not just during the test. Now the habits you created will be with you for life. So take it seriously, and remember: If the test is not the finish line - this is the first point.
