Difference Between G1, G2, and G Licenses in Ontario

If you are planning to get the driver’s license in Ontario, you will undergo a license system, including three stages: G1, G2 and Full G. Each step has its own rules, limitations and requirements designed to help new drivers build their skills and trust over time.

  1. G1 -License - original permission G1 is the first step. This is a permit from a student who lets you start practicing driving under certain conditions.

How to get it to: Be at least 16 years old

Pass a written knowledge test on traffic signals and road rules

Pass a synthesis

G1 restrictions: Always drive with a completely licensed driver, who has at least 4 years g and below 0.05% alcohol level in the blood

No driving between midnight and 17.00.

There is no motorway driving on the 400 series or high-speed highway unless the mentor driver is a certified driving instructor

Zero alcohol and tolerance for drugs

Valid for: 12 months, or 8 months if you complete the driver training course approved by the government

  1. G2 -License - middle stage The G2 license is your first chance to drive alone - but still with some limitations.

How to get it to: Hold G1 for at least 12 months (or 8 months of certified driving course)

Pass G1 Exit Road Test (basic driving skills)

G2 -Restrictions: Zero alcohol and drug level should be maintained

For drivers 19 or less, the passenger’s boundaries between midnight and 17.00:

First 6 months: a passenger less than 20

After 6 months: up to three passes G2 -Restrictions: Zero alcohol and drug level should be maintained

For drivers 19 or less, the passenger’s boundaries between midnight and 17.00:

First 6 months: a passenger less than 20

After 6 months: up to three passengers less than 20

If you are with a completely licensed driver, or if you are 20 years or older, these limits will not apply.
